I'm reading about the stranded folk in the Denver airport. No place to sleep, hotels are too expensive, snow too deep, etc. Infants and small children in tow, they sleep on the floor of the airport.
Several years ago, while eight months pregnant and two boys in hand, I went from California to Germany. I had suitcases full of coats, blankets, a first aid kit, toys for the kids to play with, I was overpacked my father told me. We were grounded in Pennsylvania for the night, cold and snowy. The airline booked us a hotel across town and we were bused. I won't go into detail about the ordeal, but it was an experience we were prepared for. We were off on another flight the next day.
We take airline service for granted. Of course Mom, we're leaving on Tuesday, the flight is arriving at 4pm. Unless we're snowed in, unless we miss the flight, unless the flight is overbooked or underbooked. You always need to plan for mother nature.
For yourself and each person in your party:
A blanket and a small travel pillow.
Something to do and read.
Some snack foods and a bottle of water.
Carry your prescriptions and any drugs you require.
Keep your address book handy for the area you'll be traveling. A friend might be able to put you up for a night.
A change of clothing
Toothbrush and hairbrush
A container of wet-wipes
A jacket that's foldable
An extra pair of socks
For babies and small children add:
Formula
Diapers
Diaper ointment
Wipers
Clothing (Including sleepware)
Portable bottle warmer
Baby food (more then you think you'll need)
Entertainment (toys, music, etc)
Carrier (strap on kind or sling for smaller babies, on the back for older ones)
Put all the baby stuff in one carry-on. Each person gets their own carry-on. Duffle bags work well for adults. Kids like a back pack. Carry a copy of your tickets and itinerary. Carry emergency phone numbers and some change in case you have to a use a phone. Write down the plan for the trip each way. Make a backup plan. Pray to the travel gods before you go.
