Upgrade Hell

January 5th, 2005 · No Comments

The end of the quarter always seems to bring software upgrades. Althought the features are usually something I've been clammoring for, I hate the upgrade process, especially when it isn't as simple as copying a couple of files.

It usually goes like this.

Backup an entire directory of files. We're talking megabytes of data in multiple subdirectories. I'm lucky enough that my server has direct access, I can't imagine backing up from my server to my local hard drive.

Backup the database. Piece of cake with the right tools, but I'm a geek, I can't imagine someone non-geek doing this.

Install the new version. Copy any configuration and modified content from the backup to the new setup taking care not to overwrite anything new.

Check if its working. Modify any settings for the new version and perform any SQL upgrade scripts. Check if its still working.

At any point above, if it stops working, revert to backup copies and hope it all rollsback. Otherwise, bask in glow of newly installed features and wait until next upgrade arrives.

Fix gnashed teeth, pulled hair and purchase new mouse because the other one is embedded in my desk from repeated pounding.
