10 Minute Chunks

August 16th, 2006 · No Comments

At the end of the day, do you ever feel that you didn't accomplish anything? Where did the time go, you ask yourself. I spent most of the morning attempting to slog through the paperwork, answer the phone calls, put out the fires. Yet my inbox is full, my todo list is overflowing and the blinking light on my phone tells me there are people still waiting for me.

You can do so much in 10 minutes' time. Ten minutes, once gone, are gone for good.. Divide your life into 10-minute units and sacrifice as few of them as possible in meaningless activity.

Instead of spending the entire day at your desk - hours ticking by, try a new tactic. Get yourself a timer. It can be a computer version or just one of those inexpensive kitchen timers. Set it for 10 minutes. Pick a task off the list and accomplish as much as you can in 10 minutes. You'll find a sense of momentum hitting you. Can I get this done in the 10 minutes I have?

When your 10 minutes are up, evaluate the task. Is this something you should be doing - its taking too long. Is there someone you can delegate this to. Is there a quicker way?

Give yourself a break at the end of a batch of 10 minute chunks. After a while, you won't need the timer, you'll find yourself automatically chunking your time.
