Stop Listening to the Noise

September 8th, 2005 · No Comments

One of my favorite tv shows since it started has been Six Feet Under. A soap opera with a twist. It closed up shop this season, but left me with an interesting thought to ponder.

Nate, one of the main characters, who died this year was 'speaking' to his sister after his death. She was depressed about all that she and her family has endured. His comment was to stop listening to the noise.

I have a tendency to listen to far too much and be bothered by every detail. I compare myself to my peers, am I doing enough, too much, what are they doing the same, what are they doing differently. One can spend a lifetime just keeping up with the Joneses. Why should I care about anyone except myself and what I am doing? Do they fret over what I'm doing? Do they even care? I doubt my antics keep anyone up at night.

So how do I stop listening to the noise when my job entails keeping track of new technology and business trends?

Business Agility is the fine line that is walked between listening to the right stuff and tuning out the noise.
