Return Receipts in Mail.app

October 19th, 2006 · No Comments

We all hate them. But sometimes you really have to use them. Case in point: I sent it, you received it. No I didn't the client says. Hmm, must be in your junk mail. No, I've looked. Here's the return receipt - it must be there. Whoops, sorry, I found it. But I still hate them.

In Mail.app on my mac - I have no way to create an email with the request for a receipt or to receive someone else's requests. At least nothing built in to the product.

I've tried a couple of the applescripts out there for the sending and the receiving but they've hung up the system or created a loop.

Finally a two part solution:

1. Send an email with a return receipt requested:

Ody's Webpage

2. Read the return receipt request from the sender:

Don't use the first script - it hung up my system and it required me to push the send button. Instead use the comment by serko92. His script and rule change makes it work! Best of all, I can change the way the return receipt looks.
