Learning How to Listen

September 29th, 2003 · No Comments

I'm a talker. Although I've also been labeled as a good listener, that skill is a forced capability, not a natural one. Listening takes every effort I have, and is well worth every effort. Like organizing, it is one of my intentioned efforts.

By listening, I don't mean the act of hearing, that is a passive activity. The process of listening requires more skill than talking. It requires hearing, interpreting, organizing, categorizing, responding, recognizing and silence. Silence makes me uncomfortable. But being uncomfortable is a good thing. That's where I learn the most about others and about myself.
