Years ago, my mother's rituals used to drive me crazy. Now that I'm older, I miss the Sunday nights with a cup of tea in front of Columbo or a weekkly tv movie. I miss my grandparent's ritual of cheese and ginger ale, Lawrence Welk. I have adopteed my own rrituals, but there isn't always time to keep them in place.
We need to slow down and take the time to experience rituals and expose our children to them. Rituals give us peace and comfort in our hectic world. Read a nightime story, to your child, to yourself. Take a bath on Sunday instead of a rushed shower, take off an hour early on Fridays, stop by the beach on your way to work. Eat lunch outside on Tuesdays. Have dinner with a friend once a month. Rituals keep you sane in an otherwise insane world.
