Goals vs. Deadlines

December 1st, 2003 · No Comments

Twice today, while talking with coaching clients, I had a realization that many of us set goals for ourselves without deadlines. We plan for a distant future, a three year plan for example. Yet, we never say when we will reach these goals. The goal goes unfulfilled and shoved to the back of our minds.

Many of my long term goals are unreached, simply because deadlines for other realities got in the way. The other side is true as well, you can't set a deadline for something without a goal to reach for. Think of them as working in tandem, not in competition for one another.

Set a long term goal, define the steps necessary to reach your long term goal and set deadlines and limits on the steps. Did you know only a small percentage of people plan their day, I'm sure its an even smaller percentage that plan their lives. What deadlines and limits can you set for yourself this week?
