Firestorm 2003

October 27th, 2003 · No Comments

I'm indoors today with two teenage daughters and a six year old son. No school due to our wildfires here in San Diego county area of Southern California.

I live in Oceanside about 5 miles from the 15 freeway, the current firebreak keeping the fires on the east side of it. There is a fire to the north of us at Camp Pendelton, another to the east of us in Valley Center and Escondido. The Cedar fire burns to the south east of us in Poway, Ramona and down to El Cahon. Another fire burns in Alpine, also east of us. Still another burns to the south eeast of us in Otay Mesa. The news conflicts on the loss of acreage and housing but its somewhere over 200,000 acres have been burned, 11 dead, hundreds of homes.

My husband's boss was evacuated from his home at 2am on Sunday in Ramona. He doesn't know if his home is standing. My aunt and uncle were packed and ready to evacuate, but the fire spared them before they received the order. Their home is safe in Upland.

This morning still has us in a safe area. The air is hot and heavy with smoke and makes it difficult to breathe. In areas south of us, the sky is dark with smoke and visibility is reduced to feet.

School districts have closed all area schools. People are being asked to stay at home and not head to work unless they are fire, police or medical. Santa Ana wind advisories are scheduled for today, but the air seems fairly still for now. The separate fires are expected to join into one massive fire sometime today.

Evacuees are being directed to the Qualcomm stadum where we were scheduled to hold an NFL game tonight. Thousands spent the night in the parking lot. Our fire crews are tired and hungry, they are not expecting relief crews from other parts of California due to the budget cuts reducing the numbers of fireman. If you, a friend or family member have left your home or lost your home, my heart goes out to you. Take care and stay safe.
