Dreaded Phonecall

October 12th, 2004 · No Comments

I had that dreaded phonecall last night. You know the one. Its 9:30 at night, daughter is out driving back from friends. Phone rings - its her. She's crying, hysterical, she's been in an accident.

First thought - Are you ok? Second thought - Is anyone else hurt? Third thought - How about the car, is it drivable? Mommy, please come, I need you, she says.

Intersection has two cars, my daughter's and the other person's. They hit head on as she was turning. Both airbags deployed. Bruised lip, bloody nose, swollen lips, cut lips from braces, banged up arm. But she's standing and I can breathe.

Patrolman approaches us and pleasantly reminds us to remain calm. He tells us it was a successful accident - no injuries. The cars bumper is totaled, the radiator shot, airbags deployed and broke the windshield, but yes, she's alive and so is everyone else.

Its morning and I'm running on caffeine and adrenaline. Not a good combo. She's upstairs sleeping, her neck hurts, her lip hurts, but her pride is the big injury. Her pride and her independence since Mom will be driving her around until the car is fixed. But yes, its much better than any alternative. Thank the stars, the aligned planets and anyone else who was involved in making sure she was ok.

And now for the lessons learned:

1. The car can be fixed, lives can't
2. Airbags work, but can cause damage to your car - better your car than you
3. Its called an accident for a reason, its an accident
4. Cops can be there when you need them
