Merlin Mann, of 43folders.com fame, has been rethinking his site. I can really relate to his restructuring and rethinking of how he wants his business and site to work. We can all relate, or at least we should all relate to his thoughts and actions. If you haven't thrown all your hard work into the trash and started over lately, I can highly recommend it. In fact, Merlin takes the approach on the site to remind us to re-learn how to use it.

Merlin, please, if you're going to take this approach, what all of us readers would like is for you to journalize it. Toss around your ideas on the site so we can learn with you. That's been the exciting part of watching your site grow and change. That goes for anyone who is going through a transition, let us learn your trials and tribulations as you change.

If you're restructuring your business, let us restructure ours with you. If you're becoming a public speaker, let us in on how you are doing it. Writing a book? We can learn to write one too, if you let us know the steps you've used and what you've learned along the way. We can offer one another encouragement, support, share in the headaches and successes. Isn't that what building a website community is all about?

The reason for the parens in the title, is that this year is my official goal year. I'm hitting 50 in 2008 and I want it to be a spectacular year.

I'm going to think of it as my last year – not on earth, but in this life. Because 2008 is going to be a different life.

Part of the goal set for 2008 is to upgrade my blog, yes, again.

Goal set 1:

Visual
I want to completely redo the template, with no outside 3rd party template. I'm going to create it from beginning to end.

RSS subscribers
I'm not keeping track of my subscriber count even though I use several tools to do so. I want to increase my subscriber count in general and specifically address attracting new subscribers.

Number of weekly posts
I've been particularly lax at posting every day. Since I now am using a new product to keep myself organized (Omnifocus and GTD), my goal will be to post every day. I've established a notebook to keep track of my blogging ideas and this will be the focus
for posting each day with fresh ideas.

I'll add to my list of blog goals for 2008 as the new year gets closer.

I

Think of it as a page in a book. You don't write a new book everytime you write a new page or a chapter.

You post an entry to your blog. Obviously, its your blog, so you can call it whatever you want and say whatever you want when you make a new post. However, if you want to avoid confusing your readers, get the terminology right.

Moving a Typepad blog to WP for a client and she uses images in just about every post. Installation went fine, import went fine (after a bit of an issue with passwords and such). Since all the images are posted to typepad's server, that will become an issue when she turns off her account.

So, I'm off to look for a solution. First stop, of course, google search for a plugin or script that will handle the problem. Yippee, find one called cached-images. Install and press the magic button. It tells me it found all the posts with images, press the button to import. Nasty error message – your upload folder is not writable. Is so! Check the permissions on the directory, yep, permissions ok. Look at the code, dangit, its old WP code, looking for old settings. Off to google again. I find several people have tried to use this little tool, author hasn't updated it for more then a year.

Back to the mill and another try at caching the images myself.

Update on kGTD: Extensive use every day. Although I'm enjoying using it, I wonder how long before I question using it. I need to give it 15 to 30 days before making a final decision. Its a new tool, a new way of keeping track of what I do. One of the techniques in GTD is to make your mind like water. If you mind doesn't have to remember all the things it has to get done (They're saved elsewhere) then it doesn't have to keep bubbling important things to the top. That's like when you come downstairs to get a glass of water and you forget why you came down in the first place. Your mind has been elsewhere – remembering, filing, categorizing, etc. It does seem like I slept a bit better now that I'm using a new system.

My initial reaction was that WP didn't have enough plugins, but a year has gone by and wow – take a look at the colophon for a list of those that I use. I've managed to write three of my own as well.

For those of you who are still using MT – I'm a happy convert.

A few additional things to implement and a few features to add that are easier to do in WP.

So far, I have to say I'm really enjoying it. Can't beat using a captcha to reduce comment spamming. I'm going to thwart the referrers too.

I'm missing the multi-blog functionality – but there are alternatives. Please, if you're listening WordPress people – don't take away your free product later like MT did. If its free and open source, it should stay that way.
