Am I Missing the Point?

October 18th, 2005 · No Comments

Spoke with a client today about the look of my new blog. He isn't reading it. In fact, he isn't reading anyone's blogs. Now to me, that's missing the point of blogging altogether.

Granted, a blog can be used as a communication mechanism with one's customers. But the blogging world offers so much more. To me, if you aren't reading content, not necessarily blogging content, but up to date content, you're missing out on what the blogging world offers.

You aren't limited to the views of CNN, MSN, ABC, CBS and all the other corporate level news sites. You can gain a fresh perspective from your peers, from people that you might not ever speak with. People who offer their slant, a slant you might not have ever come across.

Reading blogs exposes you to numerous experts, and using tools like RSS readers, gives you a capability of gathering information from those experts quickly.

I hear it everyday though. I don't have time to read. Reminds me of the Predator film where the character is bleeding and he ignores it with the statement "I don't have time to bleed".

To me, if you aren't taking the time to keep up with information, you are ignoring a core source of information. You have to make time to keep up, your competitors are. Yes, you can argue that there are lots of blogs full of misinformation, useless text and blabering from teenagers. You're right, but slogging through the piles of trash can yield some real treasures.

If you aren't reading blogs, find someone else who is. Take a look at what they're reading. Find your treasures that you want to read everyday.
